MCR Operation Manual

Introduction:
KiYQ-LP is owned and operated by READING, WRITING, ARITHMETIC, INC., a Non-Profit Nevada Corporation. Administrative offices are located at 6295 McLeod Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89120.

KiYQ-LP has been established to provide the community with a voice for alternative opinions and to promote the rich history of Las Vegas, particularly the influence of the “Mob”.

KiYQ-LP offers a dual format of Classic Music and Classic Talk. The theme is Vintage – Retro Radio. Broadcasting as it was in the “mob era”. Our music format highlights artists who played Vegas and their songs from that period. Our talk format features both pre-recorded and “Live” programs including, mob stories, UFO information, conspiracy theories, and alternative opinion.

KiYQ broadcasts full-time …24 hours each day. Our Classic Music and Talk format is broadcast daily from 6 AM to 1 AM.

Plant Description:

Our design philosophy is based on a dual format …Classic Music and Classic Talk. As our music format is automated play out can be from a dedicated server. The talk format consists of both pre-recorded and live content. Pre-recorded content is played out through the dedicated AIR Server. Live talk content is created at the talk console.

An important aspect of our programming is to be a truly “Vintage / Retro” station. To achieve this we have gathered an extensive music library and have sought to produce a “Vintage” on air sound. Our talk studio feature authentic 1960’s era broadcast equipment, including tape cart machines and reel-to-reel tape recorders. This makes KiYQ the only Retro FM broadcast station in Las Vegas.

As stated above, the music format is rather straight forward with the play list being created in our Production Studio or off-site while play out is handled by the program automation through the AIR Server. The pre-recorded talk content is assembled in the Production Studio and files are created for play out by the AIR Server. Live talk content may be from various sources including a live host and guests, telephone feeds, Internet feeds, telephone callers, tape play out, and server play out.

Our Production Studio is located adjacent to the Master Control Room. It contains the equipment necessary to ingest and produce content for airing.
The Production Studio can also serve as an auxiliary studio for additional “live” talk show guests, providing four microphone inputs. It can also serve as a back-up for the AIR Studio when maintenance is required.

KiYQ – LP Block Diagram (simplified)

KiYQ-LP Station Audio Flow:
The Classic Talk Studio is equipped as follow:
* Broadcast Electronics 4M50 Mono Audio Console. This was a highly popular console for small broadcasters in the 1960’s. It has four dual mono input channels with a CUE system on all four inputs. It also has internal amplifiers for monitoring program or cue channels via headphones or external speaker. Headphone output is provided by a separate internal amplifier.
* Broadcast Electronics 2100 Series Tape Cart Record/Playback unit. A separate Playback unit is also present.
* Gentner SPH-3 Telephone Hybred Interface which supports “on air” listener call-in.
* Tascam 22-2 Reel-Reel Audio Tape Recorder/Reproducer. This is also a vintage 1960’s unit which contributes to the Retro sound and look of the station.
* Tascam 122MkII Audio Cassette Tape Recorder/Reproducer. It is a 1970’s vintage unit.
* Tascam PA20 MKII Stereo Monitor Amplifier to provide in studio monitoring of program material.
* Alesis 3630 Dual Channel Compressor/Limiter/Gate Processor. This is used in controlling and regulating the audio signal prior to broadcast.
* RUSSCO 4x4 Audio Distribution Amplifier. This unit was originally sold by Audio Distributors of Grand Rapids, MI, one of the primary professional audio equipment distributors in the 1950’s through the 1970’s. This was one of the first transistorized units on the market. It providers multiple “lossless” outputs from an input signal.

KiYQ Station MCR AIR Audio Flow:
The station Master Control Room equipment is as follows:
* Knox RS 8x8 Routing Switcher. This unit provides switching and routing of stereo audio signals between 8 input sources and 8 output destinations. A routing switcher combines the flexibility of patch panels and distribution amplifiers. All inputs and outputs are broadcast standard 600 ohm, nominal 0dB level. We are also utilizing patch panels and distribution amplifiers, however the router allows for simple push button configuration of equipment. It also cuts down on the number of distribution amplifiers (DAs) needed.
* DASDEC II EAS Dcoder. As a FCC Licensed Low Power FM Broadcast Station we are required to receive, decode, and “pass through” emergency alerts as provide by the Emergency Alert System (EAS). This unit is located in Rack 201 in the Production Studio. AIR program audio is fed through the unit which will inject proper decoded emergency alerts for our service area (Clark County, NV).
* Behringer MBX1002 AIR Mixer. This unit provides control over the audio sources feeding the transmitter and going to “AIR”. It is configured for the following sources.
o AIR Server
o Classic Talk Program
o Auxiliary “Live” Microphone
o Test Tone
